Bio119: Microbiome Research Lab

All organisms, including us, depend on their microbiomes to maintain organismal health, performance, and fitness. Understanding and characterizing microbial species associated with each host is important to understanding how organisms function and how they will respond to environmental stress. In this course, we invite you to participate in an authentic research experience designed to introduce you to research at a Research Intensive University.

As a student in Bio119, you will be introduced to discovery based scientific research. You will be exposed to and develop foundational skills in biological sciences while learning how to investigate animal microbiomes.

Key Skills and Learning Outcomes:

  • Cultivate your own bacteria species from a sea anemone

  • Develop and practice foundational skills in microbiology

  • Learn how to analyze a microbial genome

  • Grow your research portfolio and learn how to find and apply for research opportunities at UC Merced and beyond
